چکیده

The aim of this paper is to propose an unambiguous intrinsic formalism for higher-order field theories which avoids the arbitrariness in the generalization of the conventional description of field theories, and implies the existence of different Cartan forms and Legendre transformations. We propose a differential-geometric setting for the dynamics of a higher-order field theory, based on the Skinner and Rusk formalism for mechanics. This approach incorporates aspects of both, the Lagrangian and the Hamiltonian description, since the field equations are formulated using the Lagrangian on a higher-order jet bundle and the canonical multisymplectic form on its affine dual. As both of these objects are uniquely defined, the Skinner-Rusk approach has the advantage that it does not suffer from the arbitrariness in conventional descriptions. The result is that we obtain a unique and global intrinsic version of the Euler-Lagrange equations for higher-order field theories. Several examples illustrate our construction.

The Lagrangian-Hamiltonian Formalism for Higher Order Field Theories

We generalize the lagrangian-hamiltonian formalism of Skinner and Rusk to higher order field theories on fiber bundles. As a byproduct we solve the long standing problem of defining, in a coordinate free manner, a hamiltonian formalism for higher order lagrangian field theories, which does only depend on the action functional and, therefore, unlike previously proposed formalisms, is free from a...

k-cosymplectic formalism in classical field theory: the Skinner–Rusk approach

The k-cosymplectic Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms of first-order field theories are reviewed and completed. In particular they are stated for singular almost-regular systems. After that, both formalisms are unified by giving an extension of the Skinner-Rusk formulation on classical mechanics for first-order field theories. M.S. Classification (2000): 70S05, 53D05, 53Z05

Correspondence between the first and the second order formalism in the generalized gravity of f ( R ) - type

Correspondence between the first and the second order formalism in the generalized gravity of f (R)-type Abstract We clarify the correspondence between the first order formalism and the second order formalism in the generalized gravity where the Lagrangian density is given by a function of the scalar curvature f (R). Introduction: Up to the present, our knowledge of the universe has become wide...

Ostrogradski formulation of field theory

We present a method for the Hamiltonian formulation of field theories that are based on Lagrangians containing second derivatives. The new feature of our formalism is that all four partial derivatives of the field variables are initially considered as independent fields, in contrast to the conventional Ostrogradski method, where only the velocity is turned into an independent field variable. Th...

Geometric Hamiltonian Formalism for Reparametrization Invariant Theories with Higher Derivatives

Reparametrization invariant Lagrangian theories with higher derivatives are considered. We investigate the geometric structures behind these theories and construct the Hamiltonian formalism in a geometric way. The Legendre transformation which corresponds to the transition from the Lagrangian formalism to the Hamiltonian formalism is non-trivial in this case. The resulting phase bundle, i.e. th...
